This book is a good introduction to understanding the mechanical properties of solid polymers from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint. It is suitable for university students with some knowledge of the physical properties of polymers but advanced enough to be used in a graduate course. This is book is a much more manageable version of a previous book by I.M. Ward, "Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers". It has been useful as basic reference and provides further references should more details be desired. Highly recommended addition to any persons collection of polymer science and engineering books. The only drawback is the cost. It is a bit disappointing to see the price almost double in less than 3 years.

Abridging, anyone?

Sadly, if you're here it's almost certainly A.) that your professor has selected this case/textbook and it's what you'll be using in class or B.) you've gotten it wrong and are about to buy the wrong book. Hopefully not B. Moving on: as opposed to the other textbooks we've been 'blessed' with in our 1L year, this book is stultifyingly dull and poorly edited. Cases will run multiple pages with needless facts that have precisely zero to do with the material lesson in question. Although I found it mildly amusing, I didn't need a multi-page treatise on the finer points of the wholesale chicken part industry. Still... sadly, you've got no choice... so shake your head silently and book brief your heart out.

Smoke and State

A team of misfits on an adventure makes a good basis for a story, and tribal cultures are always tasty. Let Larry Niven loose on them, though, and you get a novel that is nominated for a Nebula for Best Novel in 1984, and a Hugo ditto the following year.

Niven's tales often hang on an epic structure: the "Ringworld" Ringworld (A Del Rey book), for example. In this novel, a central star ("Voy") is too close to its gas-giant planet ("Gold"), and the atmosphere of Gold has been sucked off into a gas torus, a vast ring around the star. The thicker part of the torus is breathable—this is the Smoke Ring where humans can survive.

The humans that do live here have adapted to the conditions in the torus, where gravity is nonexistent, but tidal forces may be felt. Mostly, the tides affect dwellers at the "out" and "in" ends of any of the millions of integral trees. The length of these massive growths can almost span the smoke ring, and they were dubbed "integral" because the opposing winds at either end bend the tufts outward into an ∫ shape. These tufts collect smoke, dirt, animal life and insects from the wind; tufts and trunks impact free-floating water globules—"ponds"—and this provides moisture for the life on the tree.

When Quinn tribe's tree sinks too far in the smoke ring toward Voy, the tribe's leader—the "Chairman"—sends the tribe's least useful citizens to climb the tree to its free-fall zone at the trunk and farther "out" on a hunting trip, to find a way for the tribe to survive. Unfortunately, the tree has its own plans, and those plans don't take into account the humans living on the "in tuft".

The State is hinted at in flashbacks and founding documents, and in the opinions of 'Discipline,' the AI personality of the ship that brought humans to the smoke ring. 'Discipline' has carefully forgotten the mutiny that separated it from the humans, so it cannot be biased against the descendants of the mutineers, and it stays out of the gas torus to preserve the ship's physical integrity.

When the disaster at the Quinn tree brings 'Discipline' back into contact with the survivors, that contact brings humans under the eye of the State for the first time in hundreds of years. The Quinn survivors worry about being made "copsiks" (slaves) by another tribe or captured by the longer-limbed free-falling fluff-jungle dwellers; they should be more worried about Discipline's intentions.

If you haven't encountered "The Integral Trees" yet, it's time. The people of the Smoke Ring may be strangely shaped by their gravity-less environment, but their cultural adaptations prove they are all too human.

Niven has a peculiar propensity of contradicting himself (or, rather, the characters) on occasion, in word or deed, which makes for some unpleasant speed-bump moments for the more careful and thoughtful reader. Aside from that minor quibble, I've read this book probably on the order of twenty or so times, so that speaks for itself towards it being a good read.

A superb overview of LFIA technology

Those seeking to beat drug tests will be disappointed by this book. For drug-war chemical "arms race" information, look elsewhere, such as online websites or hardcopy publications in head shops. But for anyone designing, building, or using Lateral Flow Immunoassay (LFIA) medical devices (test strips) in R&D, manufacturing, or clinical settings, this is a mandatory textbook, and a very, very good one.

The price is steep--ten times that of a typical non-fiction 200-page trade paperback. Is it worth it? A resounding Yes! The construction, chemistry, and manufacturing of LFIA devices are all covered in depth. LFIA-based products are used to test for hundreds of metabolic and infectious disease indicators, both in the field and at home. This book ensures you will be deeply and well-informed about LFIA testing strengths and weaknesses.

Some caveats--this book is not light reading for the beach. While most sentences are finely polished gems, you will need to plow through this book methodically, as you would a math or a programming book. Different aspects of LFIA are discussed from different perspectives, and the full picture emerges only slowly, but will be exciting and rewarding to those who persist--there is much to know about such seemingly trivial technology. (The strength of LFIA is its simplicity. So is its weakness.)

So be patient--everything is explained eventually, just not in any one chapter or section. Also, a bit more copyediting to sprinkle some words like "the" here and there would smooth out some syntax. But that is a minor quibble. Overall, if you are in the test strip immunoassay business to monitor the qualitative presence or absence of key indicators in saliva, blood, urine, or food samples, without fielding expensive chromatography or spectrometry equipment, get this book and study it intently. The knowledge payoff will be enormous.

Not what you think it is.

For those who have seen Jay's houses on Yahoo! or otherwise and want more information, you might consider this book. I said "might." Jay goes through his history of living in small homes, and then goes on a bender about why small homes are preferable to large ones, why people who design large homes and large neighborhoods are poo-poo heads, calls a few architects pretentious and arrogant, then goes on to talk mostly about how to go about designing these homes in architectural terms. He writes about symmetry of design, and so on, covering more ground in cosmetic design than practical usage of space or structural considerations.

There is useful information, such as how to legally build and live in one of these homes in your area, though the topic isn't exhausted by any means. He also discusses the general building process, but if anything his youtube videos or his website are more detailed.

It's just...Mr. Shafer is preaching to the choir. By the time you've bought a $36 book, you've got your own ideas about why you should build a tiny house. What you want to know is the nuts and bolts. What kind of solar and batteries to buy and how to manage them; how to plumb the house; how to downsize your lifestyle (what to get rid of, what to keep and what to get); things of that nature that just aren't present in a real way. Jay is writing for the home designer, not the homeowner. So if you buy his plans, he's writing a book that's mostly intended for himself.

I guess he wants you to attend his lectures. ;)

Edit: A few folks have asked in the comments for an alternative that does cover the how-to information. I would recommend "Off The Grid: Simple Solar Homesteading" by LaMar Alexander. Check out his youtube channel "solarcabin". He provides a lot of information about his off-grid cabin. While not on wheels like a Shafer Tumbleweed, many concepts still apply.

a small book for small houses

I was so dissapointed when I got this book after reading the description given on the website. For $36 and a claim that this included, 'plans and how to' I expected so much more.

Is it filled with beautiful color pictures of adorable little houses? Yes. Is it a coffee table book? Not unless your coffee table is tiny. I was shocked by the books size. It measures 7" x 7" meaning the floor plans, which are on half a page are less than 3" square. Forget real detail.

My complaint isn't that the book isn't pretty or interesting but it is being 'sold' as a how-to and it simply isn't. Save your money.

Great book with tons of information on small living. I'm not impressed with the quality of the book though. It took about 3 days before the pages were falling out of the binding.

Update: the company contacted me to offer another book free of charge. They had a problem with their first run.

A must read for all parents of children in the digital age.

I work with families and are often talking to parents about their children's online safety and behaviour. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, mobile phones and the internet are our children's social world now - like it or not. For us as parents and professionals it is important to understand this world - its benefits and its dangers. This book helps put some of the risks in proportion, debunk some of the language/jargon used and most importantly help adults understand a world that can be somewhat foreign. This book is well written and informative. A definitive guide to avoid your kids dealing with the nastier side of the internet (grooming, cyberbulling, internet addiction). There is also some important pointers about the law and internet use. I was given a free copy of this book to review and give my honest opinion - a must read for all parents of children in the digital age.

An accomplished welder with thousands of hours of hands-on experience, Dave Hoffman has been teaching welding and fabrication for more than 25 years. He assisted with the development of an Associate Degree program in Automated Manufacturing at Fox Valley Technical College and developed an Associate Degree program for Welding Technology. He also received a state grant to redevelop the Metal Fabrication/Welding Diploma program for which he wrote program requirements, competencies, and the complete curriculum.

 

After completing development of the Associate Degrees in Welding Technology, Dave tested and passed the requirements to become an AWS CWI and CWE. Shortly after, he got involved with AWS and was on the B5E Committee, helping to write the B5.5: 2000, Specification for the Qualification of Welding Educators. Most of the welder certifications in that standard were already certified, however some were not. Dave welded GMAW-S vertical up and overhead plates to certify the welding procedure used in the standard.

 

A past winner of the prestigious Lincoln Award, Dave holds a B.S. in Industrial Education and an M.S. in Technical Education from the University of Wisconsin - Stout. He also holds (and wrote) a patent on a product he designed and built in his home shop, and since retiring from teaching, occasionally works as a weld consultant for training and testing in industry.

Kevin Dahle has twenty years of experience teaching as a welding instructor at the Associate Degree and Vocational Diploma levels. Prior to his academic career, David worked for Miller Electric Manufacturing Company. He was initially hired to build new inverter welders and eventually joined the service department where he conducted repair, maintenance, and operation of welding power sources and accessories for customers. As an application technician for Tig Industrial Products, David provided information and advice to customers, welding distributors, and salesmen regarding the GTAW and SMAW processes.

 

David holds an AS Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology and is currently working on his BS in Mechanical Engineering.
