Very Poor Design

My autistic 7 year old loves these types of books and was delighted when he received this last week, yet every time he has picked it up to read one or more pages have fallen out. I thought it may be just him being heavy handed, but when I opened the book to see a double spread page , the same happened to me. Naturally he was distraught that his perfect book that he takes everywhere is falling apart although it is not yet a week old

My children and I crave trivia and facts. We play board games weekly that is trivia based, and we love whenever there is a new almanac released! Scholastic feeds are addiction in the 2016 Almanac for Kids.

A Must-Have Resource for Teachers

This book is wonderfully colorful and fascinating, and my fifth graders love it. We use all of the statistics and facts for real-world math. There is everything from decimals to place value covered, but the kids don't mind because it's INTERESTING! This book answers the question, "why do we need to learn math?" Because math is EVERYWHERE and this book proves it. This is also a great resource for learning about technology, geography, history, science, nature...you name it.

There is also a great section on government, and with the upcoming elections we will be using this in class to learn about that, as well. Everything is explained in kid-friendly terms.

I ordered eight books for my class to share, and will be exchanging two because the binding is loose and pages were coming out the first day. However, Amazon makes returns easy so I'm not fussed about it.

An Unusual Book

This is an unusual book to say the least. John G Fuller became a sort of supernatural detective in the last 25 years of his life(he died in 1990) writing this book along with the best selling Ghost of Flight 401,and The Ghost of 29 Megacycles these also very engaging. What makes his work compelling is the meticulous research and highly rational and objective approach to the subject matter. His first book of this sort was Incident at Exeter about a series of famous flying saucer encounters in Exeter NH in the mid 1960's. It is truly a classic of its kind. A literate , sober jewel in an area not really known for such.

This book is the story of two tragic air disasters in England in the late 1920's. One was a solo flight attempted by Captain Raymond Hinchliffe, a famous and decorated WWI Ace and a well known stage actress and pilot of the time named Elsie Mackay who wanted to be the first woman to cross the Atlantic. She was very wealthy and offered Hinchliffe 10,000 Pounds Sterling(an enormous sum at that time) to take her as co-pilot. They left from Lincolnshire in the dead of winter 1928 and were never heard from again. After he had been missing some weeks his wife received a letter from a bereaved mother who has contacted her dead son and reports that Hinchliffe has contacted her through a famous psychic of the time, Eileen Garrett. She informs the wife Captain Hinchliffe is trying to reach her. The real mystery begins at this point and I won't go into further details.It is a very original and compelling ghost story which also involves other ghostly encounters from the doomed airship R 1-01 which crashed in October of 1930 killing all but 7 crew members on a voyage to India. This story in fact is the largest section of the book.

I enjoyed this book enormously both for a history --of these British Airships especially---which I knew nothing of and the supernatural aspect which is very compelling and enjoyable.

Fuller along with his wife Elizabeth--who also wrote quite a good book on the 401 crash-- do good work and I wish there were more books of this caliber on this kind of subject out there.

A CHRONICLE OF MESSAGES FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE

John G. Fuller does remarkable research and investigative work in examining two cases of air disasters that are linked through paranormal contacts with the deceased. Like his book, The Ghost of Flight 401 (which I also recommend), Fuller brings to life the story of ace flyer Raymond Hinchcliffe, who hoped to be the first to fly across the Atlantic, from Europe to America (Lindberg had already done it the other way). To add spice to the story, a rich young heiress funded his flight and insisted on going with him, figuring to grab some glory for herself as the first woman to cross the Atlantic in an airplane. But it was not to be.

At the same time period (the late 1920s), Great Britain was working on a program for air travel to facilitate getting around the empire, which was worldwide. But they were not thinking of sending passengers on long-distance trips in the cramped cockpit of a biplane. They were betting on another form of air travel that the Germans were successfully using - the lighter-than-air machine; in this case, a dirigible labeled the R-101. It was a huge cylindrical machine filled with giant bags of hydrogen, and a sizable team of workers were tasked with getting it ready for a virgin flight to India. Lord Thompson had set a date for its flight based on a conference he had to attend, but the engineers, architects and pilots who knew it intimately believed the R101 was not ready for such an undertaking. Like Hinchcliffe's ill-fated flight, the R101 made headlines worldwide when it crashed in a field in France during a rain storm. All but six aboard were killed.

And it's the story of what happened after these tragtic deaths that makes Fuller's book so fascinating. First messages were received from Hinchcliffe through a oija board and later through the brilliant medium, Eileen Garrett. Hinchcliffe was concerned for his wife and small children, but also sent messages about what had happened to his flight, along with ominous predictions about the R101 flight to India ending in disaster due to poor design. Later, the deceased crew of the dirigible sent messages through mediums, and two men, each unaware of the work of the other, received communications through medium Eileen Garrett. Later, the communication received by each was available to investigators, who, in every case, concluded that communication with the deceased was the only viable answer to how these messages could have come about.

The information received through the medium was often highly technical, dealing with terms, equipment and techniques that only someone who was involved with the dirigible project could have known. The book includes many verbatim exchanges. Of course, these were the result of someone taking shorthand transcription or writing very fast notes. All of these events ocurred before personal tape recorders were available, and the author discusses the methods and their limitations at length. Besides being an interesting account of an important subject (do we survive death?), the book is also a fascinating look at another era. Anyone with an interest in aviation will enjoy reading the stories of both the Hinchcliffe flight and the making of the R101. It indicated to me that big government projects had the same problems then as they do now - the R101 project was full of political considerations trumping common sense, people afraid to stand up to powerful politicians and finally - after the expensive airship was reduced to a pile of rubble in a field in France - an investigation and apparent cover-up!

If I have a criticism of the book, it is the swing between whether the story is mainly about the tragic events involving aviation in the late 1920s, using material from the mediums to fill in what is known from history, or whether the book is mainly about proving that we, in spirit form, continue to exist after death. I think Fuller certainly got caught up in the story of the airmen, but he also wanted to continue a subject he tackled in The Ghost of Flight 401, which also produced excellent evidence for survival. This is an old book (the copyright is 1979) and Fuller himself has now passed on. But his excellent books are still available if you look for them, and they are still very worthwhile reading.

An Outstanding Text on Automatic Process Control

This book really delivers what it promises: A practical guide for understanding and implementing industrial control strategies, with many examples derived from the authors experienced.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Control. I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry.

The book is written in a very clear and readable way. I am not a Chemical Engineer (I am an Electronics Engineering Grad) but my work requires me to deal with chemical engineering issues relates to process control in a day to day basics. This book has been an excellent reference in my job, and is always available in my desk. If a non-chemical engineer can benefit from this book, I can bet that any chemical engineering student or industrial practitioner dealing with automatic process control will find this text most useful.

If you are looking for an excellent book, highly practical and applied, this is the one you should get.

This is very good for those who have good practical background in the process industries and aiming for professional in Automation and Control or to those with who are aiming at applying the theory of Control to the real life industry plants.

Cooper shows that this rare yet powerful recognition of commonality and the internal yearnings for community and a commitment to justice or compassion undeniably exist in McCarthy's work.

Absolutely superb - Five Stars!

Exceeds expectations exponentially. The author is brilliant, at least in her analysis of Cormac McCarthy. I've read a dozen books concerning Cormac McCarthy's writing, and I've read each of McCarthy's books, some of them twice. After reading Lydia R. Cooper I went back and reread some of McCarthy's books again. She has the best, most closely reasoned analysis of McCarthy's books I've ever read. I was often surprised in reading her and was obliged to reevaluate many aspects of McCarthy's work. She deserves five stars, and she deserves to be read by anyone who takes McCarthy seriously. I believe that he is one of the top writers in the world today, and Lydia R. Cooper is certainly his best critic.

Tracing the mid-19th-century life stories of two sisters and two brothers "four extraordinary individuals" Perry (Conceived in Liberty) guides the reader along the passage from slavery to emancipation to equality. The sisters are Sarah and Angelina Grimk‚, daughters of a white, wealthy South Carolina planter (and slaveholder). They were brazen enough to reject their state's, family's and class's pro-slavery traditions, becoming two of the most prominent and famous champions of abolition. The brothers in this story are their nephews, black men, Archibald and Francis Grimk‚, born in slavery and equally bold, eventually continuing their aunts' work into the 1930s and transforming the crusade against slavery into a battle for equal rights, thus establishing the foundation for the civil rights movement. From Sarah's birth in 1792 to Francis's death in 1937, Perry recounts their histories. A chronology, brief sketches of the major characters and a thorough bibliography supplement the text. The historical background is deftly handled; while clarifying policies (the Missouri Compromise, the "gag rule"), people (William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. Du Bois), organizations (the American Anti-Slavery Society, the NAACP) and ideas (educational reform, spiritualism), Perry never loses sight of his primary subjects. The Grimk‚s' personal struggles (the sisters' search for religious fulfillment, the brothers' pursuit of political satisfaction) and their public and published works (Sarah's, as one of America's first feminists, and Francis's, as the first black leader to question Booker T. An inspiration to young women

Lift Up Thy Voice is a compelling tale of two sisters that will inspire young women to speak up and fight for what they believe. This book recounts the significant, yet often ignored role women played in the abolition of slavery. But beyond the facts of history I enjoyed reading the more personal story of the sisters and the effect their strong beliefs had on their personal lives. Even today having strong feminist views is not without its consequences, but these women spoke out at a time when women belonged their fathers and then to their husbands, rarely to themselves. Mark Perry has written an excellent and comprehensive history of this family and I would recommend it to readers interested in women's history as well as African American history.

Perry writes so well and gave an excellent account of life in Charleston at this time

I came across this book as a reference or footnote in some other book I was reading. I picked up a copy but expected so very little from it other than who the Grimke sisters were. What a shock I was in for.
This book is an incredible read; one I just could not put down. The author blends so well the story of the sisters and weaves into it the overall history of the abolitionist movement. Perry writes so well and gave an excellent account of life in Charleston at this time, along with discussion of the American Colonization Society, Quakers, the rise of the antislavery movement and the feminist movement tangenting off of it. I especially enjoyed getting to meet Theodore Dwight Weld, a name I had heard of but knew little of. Perry also explained well the schism between the abolitionist groups, mainly between the New York Reformers led by the Tappan brothers and the New England Garrisonians.
And just as the Civil War is ending and I felt the story was as well, Perry introduces two nephews of the Grimke sisters who grew up as slaves. He continues the book with their careers in the civil rights movement. Just incredible.
I know I am reading a great book when I have no idea as to what page I am on. The book just flows. This is the first Mark Perry book I have read and will now have to look at his other writings.

Beautiful Story

I agree with reviewer Dan E. Moldea who suggests that the film studios will line up behind this one. It's a wonderfully crafted story which makes you feel you are inside the story. Kudos to author Mark Perry. He is a wonderfully talented story teller.

About the Author
Matthew Beaumont is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at University College London. He is the author of Utopia Ltd.: Ideologies of Social Dreaming in England 1870-1900 (2005), and the co-author, with Terry Eagleton, of The Task of the Critic: Terry Eagleton in Dialogue (2009). He has also edited Restless Cities (2010). He lives and walks in London.

You need tenacity!

The idea of this book was so enticing - I was reeled in by what it promised. An historical look at nocturnal London - fascinating! The reality of this offering however was a slow, turgid, heavy style of writing which was so ponderous - I got irritated, lost interest, found my whole effort to 'like' the book quite ludicrous.
I did give this book a really good try, 'gave it my best shot' (ask my friends who had long given up while I plodded on) but alas I didn't last the distance. A question : where was the Editor???

Walking the Midnight Streets

Charles Dickens was the best-known night walker - famously writing about his experiences of patrolling Victorian London during the hours of darkness in 'The Uncommercial Traveller' and thence in various of his novels. I was unaware, until reading this book, that the 'tradition' is as old as the city itself. Matthew Beaumont takes the reader on a 'literary walk' through the centuries, via the writings of the great, the good and the downright undeserving.

This is an excellent account of the tradition of staving off wakefulness by hitting the streets, and then using the experience as writing fodder. The research is extensive and impeccable, and there were many wry and amusing asides that kept me going through the 400 odd pages of closely written text.

I was given this book by one of my own readers who thought I might enjoy in it. Indeed I did. Recommended for all those interested in the history of London, seen from a very different angle. Also a fascinating read for ambulatory insomniacs. We are not alone.

A big disappointment

Far, far, far too long. And spoiled (at last for me) by the author's constant left wing political convictions.Every page dwells on the fate of the poor and the downtrodden often to the exclusion of all else.And they, as we all well know, are always with us! A lot of interesting facts and details about London - esp in the 16th and 17th centuries, but all of it well hidden behind his impenetrable thicket of politicized opinion.

About the Author

Some people get lucky and get the easy questions like the ones in this book

I passed the test. No fault to the authors, but practically nothing out there can prepare you for the SY0-401 test. Some people get lucky and get the easy questions like the ones in this book. Others like me get a test that has around 15 questions that aren't covered by this book, or the Comptia Training software called "Cert Master" ,or any other online resource. The test is so hard that if I had failed I would have no idea what to do because so many questions were not covered in this book nor in any training software or practice questions anywhere and because so many are not covered in the book I can't possibly memorize all the hard questions and then google them after the test.

My advice is this. Memorize every single protocol and every single port number that has anything to do with any protocol in the book. Some protocols and ports on the test were NOT AT ALL covered in this book so I suggest you use lots of online sources as well as this book.

Perfect book for those new to Security

This is an ideal book to prepare you for the fundamental security exam you need to introduce you to this field, the CompTIA Security+ SY0-401.

I'd previously used the last edition as my main source of material when preparing for my own sitting of the exam last Spring, and passed with flying colours thanks to the well laid out chapters, granular and thought out approach - Dulaney really helps you gain a holistic approach to the technologies, methodologies and concepts he covers.

This book, if anything, is an improvement on that. The new material is well covered, and integrated in to the more established content in a logical, well explained manner. The diagrams are clean and functional, the end of chapter questions well worded, and the overall editing to a very high standard.

This book also came in exceptionally handy while preparing for my first security related job interview, which I subsequently obtained, greatly moving forward my career. It sits pride of place on by desk, next to by SSCP, CASP and CISSP books.

As with the previous edition of this book for the SY0-301 exam, I'd recommend this for anyone with an interest in learning about the fundamentals of IT security, both with our without the exam itself on your mind.

Good book, just doesn't prepare you for the exam questions.

I read this book cover to cover, did VERY well on all of the review questions, but failed the exam. I did not fail it by much, but I did nonetheless. The book gets through the material just fine, but don't think that the questions in the book are like the ones in the exam because they aren't even CLOSE to the same. The exam features many "scenario" type questions where you need to pick the BEST answer, so there are multiple right answers, this book does not provide any questions to prepare you for that. Again, the material in the book is good, but to really be successful at the exam with using this book, I feel like you would need to read it 3 or 4 times to memorize every detail of each term/topic.
