This will make you a better Java programmer, period.

"Effective Java" transformed my Java code. It made me a better programmer. If I were teaching a Java class, I would make this book a companion to the main text. I thought I knew Java pretty well and was following good basic practices, but almost every section in this book made me slap my forehead and run back to the code I was writing to refactor it. OK, maybe you don't want to/can't go and refactor all your existing code, but you will definitely write your code differently after reading this book, unless you are one of those rare superstar programmers and Java gurus who has nothing more to learn.

This is the best Java book I have ever read. It is focused, concise, and relevant, and it does exactly one thing: teaches you how to write better Java code. It is not a tutorial on how to build Java applications or a guide to learning Java. You must already know Java to use this book. It's also not a reader on general programming; while it does emphasize good programming practices that you can and should use in any language, the 57 items in this book are specifically about Java and how to use the Java language most effectively.

The items range from very basic practices that anyone writing a single line of Java code should follow to some more advanced topics that not everyone will make use of immediately (notably the chapters on threads and serialization), but NOTHING here is fluff or esoteric. You should know this stuff. Learn it, live it, love it. Did I mention it should be required reading for any Java programmer? If I were hiring a Java programmer, having read this book would be a BIG plus for any candidate I was considering... I think this book is to Java what "Code Complete" is to general programming. Seriously.

The only slightly negative comment I have, not really a negative but just something to be aware of, is that this book (at least the latest version) only covers JDK 1.4, so some of the advice should be modified just a little for the latest release, 1.5. (Notably, the section on writing typesafe enum classes -- the Enum class is now part of the Java language so you no longer need to "roll your own," but the tip still applies, as well as its suggestions on how to extend an enum class.)

This is what you need to know to become a Java guru!

This book contains a generous cross-section of the knowledge that differentiates Java gurus from advanced Java programmers.
I've been working full-time in Java since 1995, prior to version 1.0. I've also written books and articles on Java and have been teaching Java at the University level as a sideline for four years. In that time I've accumulated a great deal of "expert" knowledge about the language, the JVM, and the APIs and developed opinions on the best approaches to use in Java. At this point, reading books such as this that contain a collection of tips and advice I am usually satisfied to gain one new piece of knowledge; I learned at least six new things from this book.
Of the 50+ books on Java I've read, this book contains by far the most comprehensive and useful collection of that hard-won knowledge of core Java. The bonus is the clear and concise manner in which it is presented.
Bloch is dead-on. There isn't a single factual error or piece of bad advice in the book. The most I came up with were a couple of omissions on some of the topics. However, omissions are inevitable given the technical depth of some of the topics Bloch covers, such as serialization, exceptions and threads.
I offer only two caveats about the book. The first is that the book is for advanced Java programmers. This is not to say that this information is not useful to every Java programmer, but you need to have a comprehensive knowledge of Java in order to appreciate many of the topics. This book does not provide comprehensive coverage, but rather fills in the detail and subtleties. I teach a Java IV class and recommend this to my students as additional reading after completing the class.
The other caveat is that this book is written from the perspective of writing public APIs. Bloch is the lead architect for the core JDK APIs where the classes and APIs have special security considerations. Several pieces of advice he gives apply absolutely to a public API where you want to defend the API from malicious code. However, if the code you are creating is intended for a less hostile and more trusting environment, fully following all of his advice will result in unnecessarily complex code. The one knock I give to the book is that Bloch does not delineate the circumstances that would dictate following his rather rigorous approach to bullet-proofing an API and can leave the reader with the mistaken perception that the advice applies equally to all categories of code.
Overall, this is absolutely a must-have book for the experienced Java programmer. Even if you are not yet an advanced Java programmer, buy this book and keep revisiting it as you advance until everything in the book makes sense to you.

A young girl's journey to health

I read and loved this book as an adolescent. I recently saw it at the library and decided to take it out and read it again. I just finished re-reading it and found it as powerful as I remembered, possibly even more so.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden presents a complete picture of mental illness from the patient's point of view, without the stigma of wrongness that is frequently associated with it. The picture painted is a very real one, from Deborah's relief when the doctors confirm what she's known all along, that something is not right, to the way her family deals with the fact of her illness. Greenberg/Green evokes very strong emotions with her writing. You feel Deborah's fear that her secret world of Yr will punish her for revealing its existence to her doctor, and you share in her triumph when she begins to make her way back to the world. I put down this book with a little more understanding of how it must feel to be mentally ill. I would recommend it to anyone, teen or adult.

A Peak in to the Disturbed - with a ticket out

The "plot" for this book follows the course of events that depict a person struggling with a form of mental illness. It is not constructed as a fictional book meant to keep you interested by plot twists and turns. Rather, it gives a real perspective on how someone can struggle with their issue but find a way to deal with it using the help of a competent psychiatrist. For a peak into that world, this book is now a classic.

a compelling book

This is perhaps the fourth or fifth time I've read this book in the past forty years. It's been over twenty-five yrs since the last time. Although I've ordered Ms Greenberg's first novel, I've never read anything else of hers. When I first read it I could not believe it was not a true story, and indeed it turns out it just a thinly veiled story of Ms Greenberg's own story. It is almost impossible to put down.

There is so much in this book that speaks to those who have never been diagnosed with a mental illness. It is a good way for many to have a better understanding of schizophrenia - a schizophrenia different from Sybil or Eve White/Black, but still similar. Frankly anyone going into psychiatry should be required to read this book.
I don't know if I'll ever read it again, but it has always been a book which left me profoundly affected.

Great Storytelling and vivid imagery

I read this story as a young adult (in 6th grade) and I am now in my 30's and the impact and storyline has never left me. The Veldt combines sci-fi with the imagination and fleeting, yet intense, emotional responses of children. Ray delves into a child's mind and shows how aware children really are, and why they should be given more credit by adults. While the story can be considered a smidge disturbing a times, it's inherant brillance and poetic timing has made it a story to pass on to all generations. As with all Ray Bradbury material, this one is a must read, must keep, must share!

Short Short Story but oh so Bradbury.

Society has evolved to a place where a home can babysit and raise your kids for you, with a nursery that will bring to life anything your child imagines. George and Lydia Hadley were happy to purchase their Happylife Home so affordably, where lights turn on as you walk in a room and the house clothed and fed and rocked their kids to sleep. But something is awry in the nursery. The room is stuck on an African Veldt land with lions feeding and vultures looming- and this imaginary world feels all too real.

When George asks the kids about their African playground, the kids deny that's where they've been and when Wendy, his daughter, quickly runs ahead of George and changes the scenery, he knows they are hiding something.

Realizing that giving the kids everything they've ever wanted probably wasn't such a good idea, he begins to shut things down- including the nursery. But too little- too late, and at the end of the tale, George and Lydia finally realize why the screams coming from the nursery every night sounded so familiar.

Bradbury never fails to strike me with his descriptive wording- even in a short short story such as this:

"The hot straw smell of liongrass, the cool green smell of the hidden water hole, the great rusty smell of animals, the smell of dust like a red paprika in the hot air."

"Like a red paprika..." Hunh. Love that.

I'm also sensing, Bradbury really didn't like modern entertainment and the direction it's heading. He must have felt that eventually it would atrophy the brain and spoil the kiddos.

He was right.

Quick Bradbury Tale and a Lesson For Young Readers

Ray Bradbury's short story is really a treat. It's a criticism on not only automation in the household but how electronics and media get in the way of good communication between parents and their children, and in fact build up resentment toward the parents.

The children love their electronics and think their parents are crazy to want to take that way and be a family again. Their solution to this problem is chilling.

The book is written in an education format, where children write responses and essays to Bradbury's story.

Recommended, especially for teachers and young readers.

2 chapters are not current to the latest addition.

This book was for my Psych Class.. Here's the deal. Most chapters are included in this book. You have to search for the title not by the # for this reason for you assignments. Some chapters are totally different so you will need access to your college campus library to go to the reserve desk and check out your book for a couple hours for those days. It was worth the savings for me. I think only 2 chapters so far were different or not included. I have an A in my class. So there you go!

Students began to understand how and why psychological theory was shaped during a particular period in history and the disciplines that provide the framework of theory development. Each theorist is presented as a person whose life and experiences contributed to their subjective and objective methods used in the development of their paarticular theory. The reader is encouraged to crtical evaluate the theory and the theorists within an historical context. and to engage in self examination as well. It is an excelent text for students who are beganning to study theorys of personality.

How to develop. "Forty years ago, for a typical suburban house, the cost of engineering, planning, and surveying, including fees paid to agencies, was about the cost of a refrigerator today. Today it is probably greater than the total cost of all of kitchen and other electronic appliances combined." So write Sidney Dewberry and Dennis Couture in the overview chapter that introduces the mammoth second edition of the Land Development Handbook: Planning, Engineering, and Surveying (2002; McGraw-Hill; 1,124 pp.; $150). A development and consulting firm, the Dewberry Companies, is listed as author, which seems appropriate since most of the 26 editors and contributing authors are employees of the firm.

The first edition of this handbook was published in 1996. For this version, several of the 41 chapters have been updated, and the order of presentation has been changed to reflect the way issues come up in a project. There are six sections: feasibility and site analysis, conceptual design, schematic design, final design, plan submission and permitting, and construction. This is a how-to book that aspires to be both extensive and detailed; its table of contents alone runs 13 pages.

As the title and cover photo suggest, the authors focus on development of greenfields. The engineering perspective is dominant, and the book's brief mentions of smart growth and new ways of designing feel largely extraneous to the business at hand. Thus, the 51-page chapter on suburban street design devotes two pages to pedestrians, and the list of suggested readings in the chapter on development patterns and principles includes no work published since 1990. Good resource, easy to read

Needed this textbook for one of my classes and when I first got it, I bemoaned over how heavy it was. However, it's really easy to read and has a lot of great information. I'm not planning on going into land development but this really explained everything from feasibility/programming to site analysis to conceptual design to entitlements and permitting, etc. Very great resource!

A Book for the Project Engineer Engaged in Land Development

This book is the first book that really reflects and addresses most of the "everyday" issues encountered in site design and land development. It has a practical application and includes most of the charts, tables and nomographs that are necessary to complete a given design procedure. It also provides very appropriate and helpful examples.
