The Dictator's Last Night

This novel takes as its subject matter the controversial figure of Muammar Gaddafi, seen through the last night of his life. Gaddafi has retreated to Sirte after the fall of Tripoli in the Libyan Civil War; where the former dictator is holed up in a disused school, waiting for the arrival of his son, Mutassim, and hoping to break out and find refuge in another part of the country. While he waits, Gaddafi reflects on the Arab Spring, his life and those around him.

It is difficult to create a moving and sympathetic portrait of a man who divided opinion so strongly – both in his lifetime and since his death. Portrayed in the West as a vaguely comic figure, he was obviously feared by many in his own country, and, indeed, his own entourage, and the author manages to create a realistic portrayal of a man who is cornered and yet defiant. Reflecting on his Bedouin childhood, insults and slights – remembered and pored over – revenge, power and success; Gaddafi turns from feelings of despondency over his perceived situation, anger at the astounding ingratitude of his people and ministers and an inability to accept any dissent or criticism, even while asking those around him what went wrong…

Through Gaddafi’s fictional memories, the author manages to give us the essential history of a man who rose from poverty to change his destiny; heading a coup d’etat in 1969 to depose King Idris and having extraordinary power. By containing the book within this short, but incredibly stressful, time period, the novel feels extremely tense and gripping. Although we know the outcome, I did find the whole book simply riveting and was unable to put it down at the end. This would be an incredible choice for reading groups, with so much to discuss. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review. Highly recommended.

Disappointing

I had such hopes for this novel. I read the news but there’s so much I don’t know about Libya and its former leader, Muammar Gaddafi. I thought this first-person account of the last few hours of his life would give me insights into the politics, economics and culture of the country which he ruled, and the factors that led to his downfall. And Gaddafi, with his vanity and guile and bizarre behavior, would make the ultimate unreliable narrator.

The novel begins with Gaddafi in hiding in a disused building, with just a few loyalists around him, contemplating what he sees as the failure of his allies and the treachery of his people. We are taken through a series of conversations, interspersed with his memories and thoughts on key events in his life, ending with his attempt to flee and his violent death at the hands of a militia.

The structure should make for great drama, so what went wrong? I think the key difficulty is the voice. Of course, any narrative, particularly a first person one, is a device, but it’s not clear who is speaking here. Are we reading Gaddafi’s innermost thoughts? Or is he, even now, trying to live up to his public persona? It’s not quite either. The prose at best is functional and there doesn’t seem to be a fully developed character animating the words.

What we get instead are some clunky exchanges of dialogue, and reminiscences which don’t really take you beyond the headlines.
I didn’t feel I’d got a deeper sense of who Gaddafi was. How did he rise up from nothing? What was his appeal? What drove him?

There is some odd phrasing too. I’m not sure whether this is due to the original or the translation. But who, under any circumstances, never mind when lying in a drain facing imminent death, would muse, “A guide, though entrusted with a messianic mission, when he has official responsibility for a country, does not turn the other cheek”?

The book feels like one of those dramatised reconstructions you get in TV documentaries, where underemployed actors struggle valiantly to give life to chunks of exposition. Disappointing.

It had been a while since the last time I read a Yasmina Khadra's book but he is still one of my favorite author. In his special super simple way he has the ability to tell a very difficult story where we can almost empathize with one of the most dangerous and tyrannical man of the last 30 years. His own vision of Libia and of his role in guiding it outside the power of the western country and the reasons behind his defeat mostly; a pity that there isn't very much about the way he became the "brotherly guide", with a little help from some "Italian Friends", but ok, this book is all about the last night of the Rais before his defeat.

Era passato un po' di tempo dall'ultima volta che avevo letto un libro di Yasmina Khadra, ma lui resta comunque uno dei miei autori preferiti. Nel suo modo super semplice e lineare di rccontare le cose, abbiamo qui il racconto il prima persona da parte di Gheddafi, con il quale riusciamo anche ad empatizzare a tratti, nonostante sia stato uno degli uomini piú pericolosi e tirannici degli ultimi 30 anni. La sua personale visione della LIbia al di fuori della sfera di influenza dei paesi occidentali, il suo ruolo di guida del popolo e le ragioni della rivolta che hanno portato alla sua sconfitta. Peccato ci sia poco riguardo alla sua salita al potere, quella per la quale possiamo ringraziare anche qualche "amico italiano", ma ok, tutto sommato questo libro avviene tutto nell'ultima notte prima della sconfitta del Rais.

He also teaches technical analysis to various Morgan Stanley Smith Barney trading desks. He is an adjunct professor at Baruch College and has also taught at Rutgers University, as well as being a guest lecturer on many other campuses. He has twice served as president of the Market Technician's Association (MTA) and is currently president of the MTA Educational Foundation. Is this all?

A rather thin book on different patters found in the bar chart (e.g. head and shoulder, triangles) using daily charts. This is classic territory, since the bar chart ruled the world before the candlesticks entered in the 90s. The patterns can naturally also be applied to candlesticks.

As a description of the standard patterns this book is as good as any, but since the patters have been described in very similar fashion for at least 50 years, I expected something more from this book. I would have liked (1) a description of why the patterns happens, (2) an insightful understanding of what has changed over time, or (3) a discussion of intraday charts. Maybe it wouldn't fit with the book's objective to deal with 5 min charts, but hourly charts should definitely have been covered. He states that he isn't really familiar with intra-day charts. I'd say it's time to learn!

I don't get the feeling that the author really "lives the markets". The book feels very mechanical and there is no passion in the author's voice. The author doesn't try to probe deeper by adding something novel in his book. He seems perfectly happy writing a book that could have been written 50 years ago. Out of the four people that recommend the book on the back cover, two are also thanked for their contribution to the book. It would have been much smarter to solicit reviews from people that were not involved in providing support to the author.

Alternatives?
The classic book on chart patterns is Technical Analysis of Stock Trends by Robert D. Edwards and John Magee. The latest version book is really too thick and I would advice to get an edition prior to the mid 1980s. (That's right - very old!). I find the latest editions really too wordy and messy. The old editions are also too wordy, but less so. In addition the old editions (at least the early 80s edition) are also beautifully bound - something that looks good in your bookshelf. That cannot be said about the latest ugly version.

You could also buy Brandt's Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader: Lessons from 21 Weeks of Real Trading, which contains kind of a running commentary of which patterns are still useful, etc. Brandt considers himself an Edwards & Magee follower, but he also states that traditional chart patterns are no longer as valid in the past, but you should not expect too much thinking in that book. Still he is a successful trader for a long time that claims to follow Edwards & Magee, so worth a look.

If you are in for doing more work, I would advice you to check out Trading Price Action Trends: Technical Analysis of Price Charts Bar by Bar for the Serious Trader (Wiley Trading) (first volume of three). Even though the author uses candlesticks the focus is more on the classical bar chart formations, like wedges, triangles, flags, and channels. Just be aware that the focus here is on five minute charts.

An Excellent Contribution to the Field

This is a well written, edited, and organized book on a subject close to advanced investors and active traders. The author focuses on the principal chart patterns that, having stood the test of time, predominate, and whose analysis can be rewarding. It is not an encyclopedia of chart patterns.

The author documents some of the historical background surrounding the use of chart patterns, an element that shows the author's indepth level of research in this subject. Each pattern is described and explained with excellent examples, and references are provided for those interested in further study.

The book is not the heavy, lengthy tome that often characterizes this subject. The writing is first class adding to its educational value and distinguishing it from the hard reading that often marks technical analysis. It is an excellent source to have in one's library.

Generic overview of the same old stuff

This is just a generic overview of chart patterns. The information in the book does talk about more recent events such as the Lehman collapse and the recession of 2008. For just about every chart there are 3 pages of long-winded explanations. The author doesnt bring up any new ideas or patterns. Most of the information can be found for free over at investopedia if you are willing to do a little digging.

Chess Training Tips You Don't Want to Miss

International Master Axel Smith has an abundant passion for chess improvement and a wonderful gift for writing. I was deeply impressed by this cornucopia of training methods and insights that boosted him and his chess buddies in Lund, Sweden, to international titles.

Smith presents his material in 2 sections: 4 chapters on positional chess, then 5 chapters on training methods. The greatest strength of this book, however, is that he never really divorces the two; he sprinkles plenty of anecdotes about the training methods that helped him learn the positional principles into the first 4 chapters, and he provides a wealth of good chess analysis in the training section. And you will not just be learning from Smith: the author quotes from, and analyzes the games of, model players (generally, Swedish GMs) who helped him acquire his insights.

In the first positional chapter, "No Pawn Lever - No Plan," Smith opened my eyes to the importance of looking for pawn moves ("levers") that can change the character of a position. As I have been playing stronger opponents on chess.com, I have come to realize that they pay a lot more attention to such pawn moves than I, and Smith has helped me see why. Of particular interest is his analysis of 4 different methods of fighting against the minority attack. In addition to analyzing several games in great depth, the author provides 11 interesting quiz positions with very deep analysis (about 2 pages per position).

"Fair Exchange is No Robbery" discusses several considerations that signal the usefulness of seeking piece exchanges. He suggests, for example, that reducing the clutter can help you attack an opponent's positional weakness because it reduces his possibility for counterplay, and makes that weakness relatively more important. He also explores various kinds of material imbalances, such as rook + pawns vs. 2 minor pieces, but again he does not just talk about chess; he closes the chapter with several training positions for you and a fellow learner to explore.

The "Auxiliary Questions" chapter puts forth several questions that may help you select candidate moves if you are puzzled about how to proceed. Smith is careful not to present the 6 questions as some sort of thinking method that you must follow in all situations; they are just there to help you find your way through the occasional perplexing moment.

The "Calculation" chapter is less about positional chess than about the thinking/calculation methods that an IM (Smith) and a GM (Tikkanen) used for a very complex position. It reads a lot like de Groot's seminal work on chess thinking (Thought and Choice in Chess (Amsterdam Academic Archive)), but unlike de Groot's rather academic approach, it concludes with a variety of insights for improving the accuracy and productivity of your chess thinking. My favorite is the importance of the "falsifying" step; apparently, titled players spend a lot of time trying to prove that their selected move in a rich/critical position is really the best. I had never known! As a club player, I have pretty much gone through the move selection process, made a blunder check, then pushed the wood. I guess that's why I'm still a club player. But I'm starting to apply this falsification step in my correspondence games, so I am hopeful.

The training program begins with his key method, the "List of Mistakes." Smith goes beyond the standard "analyze your games" advice by providing detailed instructions on how you can do root cause analysis to derive a small list of things you should work on. Smith recommends analysis methods, the number of games that should go into your list, and how you can weave the insights into your chess skill set.

Smith continues with the "Woodpecker Method," which is basically Michael de la Maza's approach for learning tactics: find a set of puzzles and keep working them until the patterns are firmly in your brain. Unlike de la Maza, however, the author notes the importance of working through the full analysis of variations when you repeat a problem, rather than just recognizing the first move by memory and moving on. Smith also provides a first installment of 51 fairly complex positions for you to work through, although if you are on the lower end of the club spectrum you would probably want to invest in a book with simpler problems, or a server membership.

The emphasis on the hard work of learning is nowhere more apparent than in his chapter on openings. Smith advocates that you use Chessbase (or similar software) to build your own "books," rather than leaning primarily on the standard books and opening DVDs. Smith gives detailed advice about what kind of analysis is useful, and where and how to use computer assistance. I had never even realized that analysis engines have a "null move" feature, for example, but Smith shows how to use this and many other techniques to prepare your openings. Smith provides these tips in the context of an opening "book" that he and a friend, GM Nils Grandelius, prepared.

In the "Theoretical Endgames" chapter Smith lists 100 key endgame positions that you should master. Ever the innovator, Smith recommends that you and a friend select 10 of the positions, then set a date a month from now to play a clocked mini-tournament using them as the starting position. You will be motivated to learn them well if you are going to compete! And the process of playing the position out will firm up your knowledge. The publisher provides a PGN file with the 100 positions on their website.

In the closing chapter, "Attitude," Smith provides some great advice about avoiding time trouble, agreeing to a draw (never, if you want to improve!), and bamboozling your opponent in a drawish ending.

The one thing Smith overlooked is the importance of studying grandmaster games. Leading grandmasters like Tal, Fischer, Kasparov, and Carlsen studied thousands of their predecessors' games while they were pumping up their ratings, and I don't think they wasted their time. I speak from experience, as well: my study of a few hundred GM games has definitely helped me. So how did Smith get almost all the way to grandmaster without such study? Maybe he studied GM games in his youth and forgot to mention it, or perhaps he has compensated by reviewing chess games with Swedish IMs and GMs over the past several years. In any case, unless you can hang out with GM friends, you should include some GM game collections in your training plan. Dan Heisman has published some tips for studying GM games on chesscafe.com.

Amitzia Avni, who otherwise praises the book on ChessCafe, gently chides Smith for giving up virtually all leisure activities other than chess for 5 years, but I don't see this as a problem for the reader. I know I won't be able to pick up 400 ELO rating points in 2 years (like Smith) without investing his eye-opening amount of work, but I can still get stronger by applying some of his really useful training tips in my own chess improvement plan. I highly recommend Smith's book for intermediate club players all the way up to master.

Chess improvement is hard work

This book is for players that have a 2000+ rating.

To improve at chess beyond that level studying alone is not sufficient anymore (it may be to break 2000 or 2100, but not more). What you need after a certain level is training.

The first part of the book is about positional chess. It is good, but not revolutionary.

This book is good especially for the second part in which the author proposes a very specific training method that made him improve from 2100 to 2400 elo fide points in 2 years. You will need hard work and time to apply it, but it sounds worth.

I am not completely sure that this training method alone will suffice because I think that the author's improvement was mainly due to his incredibly strong determination to finally make the leap.

This book gives you the road to follow, but whether or not you can reach his end will depend solely on your will. I think that a lot of players will not improve by reading this book because they will not have the determination to apply his training method, but this is a problem of the players lazyness not the book itself :-)

I had to put this book away for awhile. As a class "B" player it is a bit over my head. I suggest club players with a limited budget try more user friendly material.

About the Author
Reginald G. Golledge, Ph.D., is Professor of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His interests include spatial cognition, the acquisition and use of spatial knowledge across the life-span, cognitive mapping, individual decision-making, household activity patterns, and gender issues in spatial cognition. Legally blind, some of his current research includes: comparison of spatial abilities of blind and sighted persons; development of a Personal Guidance System (PGS) for blind travelers; disposable tactual strip maps for blind travelers; evaluation of auditory/tactual information systems as travel planning aids; and travel needs of the non-driving disabled.

Robert J. Stimson, Ph.D., is Professor of Urban Studies at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. He is also a Director of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute and responsible for the operation of its Queensland office. Educated in geography at the University of New England and later taking his doctorate at the Flinders University of South Australia, Stimson is recognised as one of the leading urban researchers in Australia. He has published widely in social, economic and behavioral aspects of urban development in Australia, and more recently has worked on aspects of the internationalization of the Australian space economy and the growth of mega city regions in the Pacific Rim region. Stimson has longstanding multidisciplinary interests including the application of survey research methods in the investigation of spatial behaviour and the role of institutions in public policy and urban development and planning. His previous appointments include Dean of the Faculty of Management at the University of Canberra, Director of the Australian Institute of Urban Studies, and as a geographer in the School of Social Sciences at the Flinders University, South Australia, where he was also Director of the Centre for Applied Social and Survey Research.

Great guide to research, somewhat dated context

This is a great read for those who like dense overviews of the relationship between economic theory, research theories and global patterns of development. I enjoyed it!!
