Unio Mystica as Ultimate Purpose

_What is the Glass Bead Game? It is no less than the highest reason that an entire future civilization exists. It is the grand and ongoing synthesis of all knowledge into a unified, integrated whole (a Unio Mystica.) It is an attempt to forge a holographic intellectual world where all is interconnected and reflected in every part. This is a mission to weave the golden thread of significance and meaning through every part of a culture- science and the arts and the spiritual are all unified into a system of concentric, interpenetrating rings. All this is primarily accomplished by using the language of music and mathematics as common universal symbolism (the "glass beads" are part of a symbolic physical aid that was once used for this purpose.)

_It is no wonder that the book places the first origins of the game with Pythagoras, Gnostics, and Socratic ethics. No wonder that the League of Journeyers to the East also figure prominently in its development. To some extent the Game has been the goal of all sensitive and introspective individuals and groups down through the ages.

_All of this stands in stark contrast to our own Feuilletonistic Age where all knowledge, all culture, is unsynthesized, chaotic, and largely meaningless babble.

_The crisis that develops from this is that even if you accomplish this grand synthesis in some isolated ivory tower refuge of intellectual contemplatives- it isn't enough. It is necessary to reach out to the entire society once it is achieved in the same way that a bodhisattva attempts to enlighten the rest of mankind instead of individually passing onto Nirvana. The entire society must be made whole and sacred and not just an isolated elite. This is the realization that comes even to the Magister Ludi, the Master of the Game.

_For the game to be ultimately meaningful we have to coach everyone to eventually become Masters.

Hesse's

I just read this book and it was one of the best books I've ever read. The preface to my edition compared it to Thomas Mann's "Dr Faustus"(my favorite Mann)- which i found to be very true. I love Hesse but this is the only one of his books that was on the level of Mann for me. "Goldmund and Narcissus" and especially "Stepanwolf" also are excellent. Magister Ludi has a lot in common with the character Goldmund. This book has the intellectual incisive prose that I like so much in Mann - the mind and motivation are clearly written out, not just suggested.
The book follows the life of a great scholar from grade school to death. What distinguishes him is he has a great heart/sense of morality along with his genius. You follow his evolution as a person throughout the story. The story is set somewhere around 2500 AD but there's no indication that technology has advanced since the 1940's - or that life socially is much different...the emphasis is on the political situation as it relates to Knecht's scholarly order. Since the order is celebate like the 19C Oxford scholars there are no female characters of consequence - so you see a lot of male relationships in all different shades. Hesse lets you know as much about the game as he can and still do it justice...the game is supposed to be one of the supreme human achievements so he couldn't invent it fully fleshed out for the purposes of a novel. Magister Ludi is Joseph Knecht's title: he is Master of the Game. He's on the highest board which includes a Music Master and Master of Meditation. The climax of the book is a discussion Knecht has to have with the Master of Meditation/President of the Board of Educators to justify a momentous life changing decision he makes. I reread very few classics (I plan on rereading the major Mann and Doestoyevsky books) but this is one I would reread: it's beautiful. If you loved "Doctor Faustus" or "Goldmund and Narcissus you most likely love this one.

This Is An Excellent Well-Written And Well-Researched Book

This is an excellent well-written and well-researched book. Although some of the contents of the book are presently out of date since the book was originally written in the 1970's decade and some things have changed since then, much of the contents in this book are still relevant in the present time. She said that college is meant to get young people out of the way. Professors and administrators estimate that no more than 25% of the students they serve are really turned on by what is going on in the classroom. For some people, college is a young folks home or even a prison. Professors are paid for sounding off to a captive audience of students. Much of what people learn in a classroom will not be used in the outside campus real world. The hard economic reality is that some people will need to take jobs in fields that are outside their majors. A usual academic program can actually damage a creative person. Sometimes in some cases a self-educated person could truly be more educated than a formally degreed person. The Anatomy of Success chapter mentions about some people who never went to college or did go to college but dropped out and were very successful.

A Little Dated But Still a Damning Critique of College

Mandelbaum was a college administrator who called "BS" on the whole college scam. Though this book was written in the seventies, the points remain valid. College is in her view a money pit and "a nursing home for young people". She documents the excessive marketing efforts by schools to ensnare most any student-- including the cartoon effort of dropping flyers from planes at High School Graduations. Nothing is sacred in the quest to rack up student debt.
The meat of the book concerns the vapid, really fatuous, nature of the college courses. Professors are given free reign to read from their notes, called "lecturing", produce bogus/inane research, and hand out degrees that have no bearing on the actual job performance. She even includes a few testimonials (anonymous) from insiders and burned out students. One only has to change the dates on the comments or dollars involved to see that nothing has changed in the intervening years.
Finally, she delivers the knock out blow. Mandelbaum advocates (almost two whole pages of solutions) vo-tech schools, apprenticeships, starting up a business, even sending off the kids to a commune. In any case the results will be tangible. A kid will have the savoire-faire to take any jobs that come and not have to have a string of letters after his name. This book is essential now that Americans have created a one trillion-dollar student debt bubble. I agree with her that the future of college is that colleges should become museum pieces. We should not have to bankrupt ourselves to learn common sense.

GOOD BUT DATED

ITS a very old book that calls a college degree "one hell of a qualifying exam"!!!!!!!
with personal computers and the internet things have changed alot in 30 years or more since the book was written.
may be worth checking out if you wonder about college from a naysayers perspective.

About the Author
David Starkey is Professor of English and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Santa Barbara City College.  He is the editor of two collections of creative writing pedagogy, Teaching Writing Creatively (1998) and Genre by Example: Writing What We Teach (2001), and he has been active in all four genres.  His poetry collections include Adventures of the Minor Poet (2007); Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems (2006); and Fear of Everything (2000).  Several poems from his most recent collection, A Few Things You Should Know about the Weasel (2010) were featured on Garrison Keillor’s The Writer’s Almanac.  His fiction has appeared in American Literary Review, Rio Grande Review, Sou’wester, and in the anthology Blue Cathedral: Contemporary Fiction for the New Millennium.  His creative nonfiction has been published in Cimarron Review, Gulf Stream Magazine, Tampa Review, and in the book Living Blue in the Red States (2007), which he edited.  His plays have been produced in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis, Toronto, and elsewhere.

GOUGING

I really hope St. Martin's is reading this. I teach creative writing, a minimum of about 80 students per school year, so I received a copy for evaluation purposes. My course is an introduction to poetry & fiction and currently I need two books to do that. I saw this book, saw how thin it was, and thought, hmmmm, maybe I can drop the book on poetry (50 pages longer than this one) and the book on fiction (about the same length as this one) and just go with this one. I had no idea that this slim volume would COST MORE THAN THE OTHER TWO COMBINED. The basics are here, but it is truly repulsive that St. Martin's is looking to gouge students to the tune of $56.48 (really? after 56 dollars they need to add that 48 cents?) for a PAPERBACK that is a mere 246 pages long (it is incorrectly listed on Amazon as 304 pages long; padding out a resume, perhaps?). This is just one more reason students come out of universities with crushing debt--even St. Martin's wants to get in on it. So, no, I won't be ordering this for my classes--unless St. Martin's wants to drop the price by $36.49 ($19.99 seems a fair price to me). And by the way, the other two books I use contain three or four times the information, the examples, the techniques contained here. Why would I pay MORE for far less?

Well-written, sweet and incisive

There are not many well-written, sweet, and incisive textbooks that can be packed in a carry-on bag for your next writers’ conference or workshop, but David Starkey’s book is a must for the emerging writer and workshop leader offering all the essentials needed for short forms like poetry and short story. Before diving into the book, he offers these wise words: “Read, write, listen, don’t give up and have fun.” The book is packed with words of wisdoms, food for thought interspersed with solid advice, such as, “Reading is a trigger for writing,” and “Write from clarity and revise to strangeness.”

This volume is plentiful with stellar poems and short stories to spark ideas from luminary poets and such as Kim Addonizio, Elizabeth Alexander, Joy Harjo, Yusef Komunyakaa, Naomi Shihab Nye, Mary Oliver, and Molly Peacock, and short story writers such as Margaret Atwood, T.C. Boyle, Ron Carlson, John Cheever, Lorrie Moore and Tobias Wolff. The book also includes checklist reminders, kick-starts for inspiration, suggested writing prompts, and an excellent glossary for a quick glance to answers. About the Author

Paul T. Hellyer is a seasoned politician, journalist, and commentator, and Canada’s senior privy councilor best known for the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces and for his 1968 chairmanship of the Task Force on Housing and Urban Development. All American's should read "The Money Mafia", the author nails everything that's happening & that has happened for the last 50 years in the USA. He's 91, a Canadian who loves our country and doesn't want to see it destroyed, Grew up during the depression, lived through WWI & II, I listened to him for 3 hours, and was just spell bound by him. American's need to read what he has to say and take action so our nation doesn't become what he say's it will. A dictatorship! Don't think it can't happen, the CABAL, has been engineering this to happen for the last 50 years! They want to control everyone & everything! Please share with your friends and all AMERICANS!

A MUST READ FOR EVERY AMERICAN!

This is a must read! Every American must read this now! Before its too late. We are about to lose our ass because too many people don't know how our financial system is really set up. 8 banks own the Federal Reserve, not us, and they have been poising to pull the rug under our feet and will do so at any moment. Any polititian, economist, activist, military, everyone! needs to read this. Paul Hellyer is a respected economist and former Canadian government Minister of Defense. He is 90 years old, has a lot of first hand experience and expertise and he knows what he is talking about.

This is a five star read. Paul Hellyer covers such topics as "the Cabal" that runs the United States, the Council on Foreign Relations, Bilderbergers, Trilaterals, Globalization. Free Trade, the IMF, banking scams, Dwight D. Eisenhower's warning about the Military Industrial Complex, the Project for the New American Century, Global Warming, G20, Star Wars, the real terrorists who carried out the attacks of 9/11, 2001 (and the fallout). Readers will be challenged by Israel-Palistine, Spirituality, UFOs, Debt and The New World Order. All material well referenced.
The Prime Minister and Opposition leaders need to read Paul Hellyer's book and co-operate to head off the threatened destruction of Planet Earth. Paul lays out his suggested formula to save us; our politicians need to quit petty squabbling and address the coming emergency. Here is a lifetime of experience seldom available on mainstream media.

Love - the hub of Christian faith

Aubrey Johnson has added to his outstanding lineup of books - The Barnabas Factor, Renewing Your Spiritual Life and Spiritual Patriots - with his most recent release of Love More, Sin Less. Johnson's emphasis in his newest book is on developing a God-shaped heart by presenting the biblical concept of love as the "hub around which everything revolves in the Christian faith." In a masterful way, he accomplishes the aim of the book, which is "to help you examine the connection between love and other foundational components of Christianity and, thereby, to unleash the gospel's power to produce an astounding and enduring change in your life."

The book's six sections are divided into 13 chapters so that it is ideal for one quarter of a year's Bible classes either on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings. Each chapter underscores the thesis of the book as stated by the author: "The key to building a great life (and a great church) is a great commitment to the Great Commandment."

Johnson begins by showing that love is at the center of the gospel and is subverted by sin in our lives. He continues by demonstrating that love is inseparably joined to faith, salvation, sanctification, fellowship, evangelism, hope and unity. Along the way, the author shows how love helps us deal with sin, unbelief and temptation and how love leads to repentance in the life of the believer.

Each chapter is followed by study questions and a survey designed to help the student monitor his growth in the life of love. Much of the survey information is appropriate for generating discussion in a class setting and can contribute greatly to helping the reader live out the truths presented in each chapter.

At the end of the book, Johnson presents a short treatise on "The Mystery of Sin" that in itself is worth the purchase price. From the foreword to the afterword, Love More, Sin Less is captivating and helpful reading for the Christian who is struggling to overcome sin as he pursues a life of love.

Great for Ladies Classes

We used this book for a recent ladies Bible class study. The author discusses how we should focus on loving more, instead of focusing on trying not to sin. The more we love (God, ourselves, each other), the less we will sin. I learned a lot from the book, and it led to a great Bible study.

I have read several of Mr. Johnson books and everyone of them provided a clear life application of the scriptures. This book shows a different level of love. To truly love is to sin less. This eye opener showed me where I thought love was applied really was not. This book has help me in my Christian walk and talk and now I am more conscience for the love I have for others. Thanks Aubrey! Great job!!!!!
