A good place to start

This book is a highly professional overview of the topic. It is written at a level to be useful to professional anthropologists not specialized in archaeology as well as laypersons who just want to read something interesting. The focus means that it will be of most use to those in northeastern North America, or perhaps secondary school or college teachers that want a condensed view of regional prehistory. The somewhat chatty style and good illustrations make it emotionally accessible.
