Yes, Sir/Ma'am
One of the greatest rules we came up with was teaching our kids to always say, "Yes, ma'am" and "Yes, sir" when we ask them to do anything. They must politely agree first before they can offer up another option.
If we ask our son to clean his room, he needs to reply, "Yes, sir," before he may ask, "Can I please clean my room after I finish my game?" We teach him the importance of being obedient, but we also give him the freedom to have a say in the matter.
Of course, you could drop the "sir" and the "ma'am," but we can't stress the importance of this particular suggestion enough. Who wants a disrespectful child who tells you "No" whenever you ask for something?
You don't want to raise frightened little robots, but obedience should be a top priority in your household.

a great guide to enjoying life with kids from 5 minutes of reading a day

This is a super practical book of helpful ways to enjoy your kids and actually have an enjoyable relationship with them. You read a page, and you go take it and try it right now--it's that simple and applicable. Readable, helpful, and empowering to parents without getting deep and psychological. Take one tip per day and this is a huge help to connecting with the kids.
It's clear that the author is a caring dad who is writing from experience and has taken time to learn how to engage with his kids. If kids know how to interact with you in a way that you want, it increases the quality of life for both parent and child. This book is a great guide to being a good parent with great kids, to help you figure out how to spend time in ways that matter, even if you do have a busy life, even if you do live on a budget. If you need help, just pick up this book and give it 5 minutes at a time--and you'll be pleased that you did. Every one of the 101 tips is helpful and I endorse them wholeheartedly.

Great book for all parents!

What a great book! As a parent of two boys I am always in need of fun ideas to motivate them and to help them learn life lessons. This contains what I was looking for - helpful tips and ideas without the author forcing their experiences on me. These ideas provide a foundation of interactions with my children that WE can build on to help me them learn the values I want them to have. Great reference for those rainy days where I need a little inspiration.
