Jenna Wolfe serves as the Today show lifestyle and fitness correspondent. Jenna spent 12 years as a sportscaster before joining the Today show in 2007. A self-proclaimed dare devil and thrill seeker, she is also a certified personal trainer. She lives in New York City with her family.

Thinner in 30: I spent a month following this book

I received a copy of Thinner in 30 from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I received my book on November 25th, and have spent the last month reading it and implementing the steps.

I have seen Jenna Wolfe on The Today Show, and I love her enthusiasm, and her sense of humor. This book arrived at the perfect time; with three children and a busy schedule, it isn’t always easy to find time for exercising. I used to push the stroller around the neighborhood with my oldest daughter, but when my twins arrived two years later, pushing a double stroller with two babies and a toddler seemed too daunting. Well, the “babies” are now in first grade, the big girl is in third grade, and I no longer have any excuses. This book was just what I needed.

The book is subtitled “Small Changes That Add Up To Big Weight Loss In Just 30 Days”, and that is just what it does. Thinner in 30 is meant to be read over the course of a month; each day, there is a new tip to incorporate into your routine. These tips are all relatively small: 19 sips of water first thing in the morning, take 10,000 steps a day, write down everything you eat, etc. Eventually, exercising is incorporated into the routine, but the changes are gradual.

So, I suppose I should answer the biggest question: over the course of the month, I lost almost 6 pounds. More importantly, I have gained my motivation back after seeing what I can accomplish. I have not really worked out since high school sports, and even then, I was lazy. But this is something that anyone can do: each exercise is presented with a modifier for people who have difficulty, and a more advanced form for experienced athletes. The workouts are based upon circuit training. They are vigorous, but they leave me energized and proud of what I have accomplished.

One thing that I really appreciated is that there are not very many food restrictions. I have appreciation and respect for the science behind removing certain foods from my diet, but it can be difficult to stick with an extensive list of “don’ts” for the long term. It’s much easier to avoid simple carbs after 6:00, and avoid added sugars.

I would absolutely recommend Thinner in 30. I’m pleased with my results after only a month, and I’ve gained the motivation to continue on my journey to a better me. Wolfe’s sense of humor is a big part of what made this book so fun to read. I especially loved her anecdotes about conversations she has had with her parents about incorporating these healthy choices into their routines. And of course, I will remember not to eat pudding for lunch!

Jenna brings out the best in YOU

I loved this book and quite frankly I am going to purchase a paper copy as well so I have it to pack around and flip back and forth to look at the exercises, inspirational quotes and many other things I want to refer back to. If you've ever seen the commercial where you have a devil on one shoulder helping you make bad health decisions and an angel on the other shoulder helping you make good health decisions, Jenna is the angel. It's like she knows how you're thinking and knows what to say to keep you encouraging yourself at just the right time. That's why I want a paper copy to go back an flip thru and carry in my purse. I've picked up healthy changes from this book that I will automatically use for the rest of my life, and I'm not even in all 30 changes yet. The best part is I'm losing weight too. The MOST INSPIRATIONAL WEIGHT LOSS BOOK I'VE EVER READ!

By the photo on the cover I thought all the images would be as nice, but I only liked two in the book as the other's are too childlike and seem to be should be in an old fashioned children's religious coloring book. I also do not like how the images are printed on both sides of the pages. And lastly the paper quality is strange. I have not colored any pages as I am thinking of returning it- but since it was less than $4 the return shipping may not be worth the trouble. I don't think I will be ordering from this series again.

These coloring books are wonderful to just relax with and enjoy being creative. I recommend them to a more mature artist and to try different medias like gel pens, colored pencils have fun :-) be a kid again.

A great math book
By travel light and smiling
There has been an ongoing debate about what Math is. Without going into a lot of detail, the world is unevenly\ divided into camps which argue that math is a purely abstract subject, and those who disagree. Loxley guides you into the topics of advanced math-- calculus is the first destination on his trek. You get problems regarding things that you would encounter in real life, which makes it much easier to envision the math process than dealing with it on a purely abstract basis. I am fortunate enough to own several editions of this work. The answers to the problems are in a separate pamphlet for the editions of the '20's and 30's, and are specific to each work. If you are going to buy the book, buy the reprint offered on Amazon, and probably the reprint of the answer key. Otherwise, you may not get the answer keys.

This was largely due to social and economic modernization and the availability of a wider choice of foods. But part of the problem was that the bread did not taste good. In a culture in which bread is sacrosanct, bad bread was more than a gastronomical disappointment; it was a threat to France's sense of itself. By the mid-1990s bakers rallied, and bread officially designated as "bread of the French tradition" was in demand throughout Paris. Kaplan meticulously describes good bread's ideal crust and crumb (interior), mouth feel, aroma, and taste. He discusses the breadmaking process in extraordinary detail, from the ingredients to the kneading, shaping, and baking, and even the sound bread should make when it comes out of the oven. This is THE BOOK I've been waiting for. This is the history of French bread, it's for people like my husband and I who have been trying to perfect the perfect baguette for years. Literally YEARS. I have looked at Raymond Calvel's The Taste of Bread on google books, but you can't read the entire thing on it, so this may possibly be my next purchase after the Kaplan book.

If you are into the history of the baguette and want to know how baguettes caused, yes CAUSED the French Revolution then this is your book. I am also interested in how the French reacted during WW2 when they were forced to use inferior German flour instead of French flour and were making, once again, terrible baguettes. I have heard that the French were very depressed about the state of the baguette during that period and that the art of making baguettes was lost....

Some people to THIS DAY state that the taste of baguettes went downhill after the war, that the bakers no longer made the great bread that they had made before the war. Mr. Calvel and subsequently Mr. Kaplan set out to try and reverse this. Raymond Calvel worked diligently to bring back the recipes and the ways that the French had used before the entire horrible episode of WW2.

Raymond Calvel was also Julia Child's teacher at the Cordon Bleu, and he was one of the inspirations for Mr. Kaplan and this book. Mr. Kaplan is an incredible treasure, a bread historian...who is very respected in France (!) though he is American.

Bad writing about good bread

I was really excited when I stumbled upon this book. I bake bread (naturally leavened sourdough) in my kitchen and have become increasingly interested in the history.

This book was very disappointing. While seemingly well researched with interesting quotes and facts at times, it's painfully intellectual and meandering, and I had a hard time telling where the author was going in the parts I was able to read. The author should consider that a similar renaissance to the bread he loves is required in how people write history - history is a STORY, and usually it can be a really incredible story with the right writer. But reading this overwhelmed me with a stuffy, university dullness that didn't evoke any of the feelings of a complex history, or the current food renaissance that is taking place. The topic of the industrialization of our food, in particular in the country with one of the richest and most varied traditions (France), is too important to not be taken up by another more capable author.

Really interesting

Talks in depth about mating on each of the seven planes of consciousness, among other interesting topics. The topic is the same as the first chapter of The Perfect Matrimony by Samael Aun Weor. But since this is an entire book rather than a single chapter, it goes into much more detail and renders the subject much more understandable.

If You're into Esoterica, Read this Book.

If your not the type of person who generally agrees with esoteric/occultic thought, then you may take issue with some of what is presented in this book... but, then again, if you already have qualms with esoterica, why are you reading anything by Dion Fortune?

A lot of what is written in this book - I feel - must be taken in conjunction with the perspective of the author: the time period, where she comes from, and her status within that society. For example, I would question her opinion on homosexuality (even though I'm not a homosexual), given the pluralistic values of our current culture in comparison to the values of her time. None-the-less, she makes an excellent argument for her position: each chapter gradually building upon the previous chapters successively until the breadth of material becomes clear. Questions I had in the beginning and middle of the book were addressed in later chapters, leaving no holes by the conclusion.

I would, though, especially recommend that the reader take their time on the chapter regarding the 7 planes. Having those clear in your mind will make the rest of the book much easier to comprehend.

Otherwise, I agree with the other reviewers. I thoroughly appreciated how this book made a consideration of the energetic principles involved in how human being relate to one another (as opposed to providing a "thou shalt/shalt not" list of behavior based on some doctrine that doesn't explain the WHY of the preference/avoidance). This is one of those books which, personality being accepting to a different perspective, all youths should read as a "coming of age" into their adulthood (and the sexual liberty that comes with it). It would aid to dodge a lot of unhealthy relationships.

I only gave this book 4 stars based upon my ability to test its veracity against an internal sympathy/harmony. (I would have been very happy to give it a 4.5 if that were an option). Yet, this may be simply a symptom of a lack of understanding, experience and/or ability to comprehend on my part.

In any case, it's a relatively inexpensive book and a quick read (my wife and I read it together in the course of an afternoon), so there's really nothing to lose by purchasing & reading this book.

Indispensable work on Divine Marriage

As with most of Dion Fortune's works (said only because I haven't yet read them all), this piece is indispensable for anyone wanting to understand the world around them. Yes, it is about marriage -- and not only on the physical plane; that is what makes it so potent, because Fortune shows why natural marriages are as they are FROM SPIRITUAL CAUSES. But because all of creation is built up from this basic marriage of two divine halves, the book offers much to consider in contemplating any subject.
The nice thing here, too, is that despite the depths that Fortune can reach in certain works, she tries to keep this one simple enough for even beginning readers. By the end she may really be pushing them ... but by then, they've been well prepared.
This is a must-have for any student of the esoteric.
