This is not the sort of book that would normally find its way onto my bed side table, but I was sure glad to have had the opportunity of reading it, and would highly recommend it as a must read for the young/ adolescent generation of today and for anyone else wishing to enjoy three score years + ten with a full set of teeth. Many questions answered and a great leap forward for the usually daunting dental experience; thank you Dr Bonsall.

If you ever read a book about your health,teeth especially,make it this one,I've learnt more from Dr Bonsall than any dentist I've seen ever,he's open honest and holistic in his care and treatment,he changed my life from a hidden scared to say anything man into a confident happy talkative man,you need to to care for your teeth so take time to read and take it in,this book will make your life and teeth a joy to live with!

This is NOT the 1818 edition!!!

This book claims to be the 1818 original text, but it is NOT. THIS IS THE 1831 EDITION! I specifically needed the 1818 edition for my literature class, and the 1831 edition is substantially different. The overall theme/tone is different (the original emphasizes free will, while the later edition emphasizes the role of fate). There are many other small changes- in the 1831 edition Ernest becomes a soldier, while in the original he is a farmer; in the 1831 edition Elizabeth is an orphan adopted by Victor's family, while in the original she is his blood cousin; in the 1831 edition (unlike the original), Henry Clerval has to defy his father in order to go to college. I became suspicious that I had the wrong edition during class, and then looked up these differences and confirmed that THIS BOOK IS THE 1831 EDITION! If you need a particular edition for a class, be warned that this book is falsely advertised.

Great classic horror.

I have always wanted to read this book trying to get the horror classics, already read The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and decided to read this one next. The only downfall that I have to say and this does not go against the author at all, but it was a little hard to read with the way it was written. Took me a few chapters to get used to the way it was written, after that I took off with reading it. On saying that this story is so good. Wish I would have read it a while ago. If you are used to the old classic film version this is nothing like that. This is so good what I loved is you get to hear the version of Frankenstein, and then you get the Monster's version. So well written became instantly a new favorite of mine. There are a lot of scenes where it is just so sad and you feel sorry for both of them. It contains the horror and mostly full of sadness. Highly recommend this book. If you have ever thought of reading it......DO IT. I also love the way this book is made to from the cover to the gold on the pages. Just loved this book all the way around.

Ashamed I went so far in life without discovering this book!

Several things because I'm not sure where to begin:

First, I can't believe a story has been so destroyed by pop culture since it was first written in 1818. Most people today think 'Frankenstein' was the monster, or they associate the monster with Herman Munster or, even worse, Frankenberry cereal. The monster wasn't some flat-headed green man with spikes in his neck.

Shelley's description of him is something quite different. From the novel, the monster is, "an 8-foot-tall, hideously ugly creation, with translucent yellowish skin pulled so taut over the body that it 'barely disguised the workings of the arteries and muscles underneath'; watery, glowing eyes, flowing black hair, black lips, and prominent white teeth."

Without any research other than iMDb as a quick reference, I'm left to guess the 1931 Boris Karloff movie portrayal must have molded the green monster who walks in the slow, stiff, and stilted way to which audiences have become accustomed.

Second, I saw many parallels to addiction and "addict behavior" in this story. The torture, the shame, the physical illnesses Victor Frankenstein suffers, over his creation and the havoc it wreaks upon those closest to him at times resembles a lost soul who can't help but create self-destructive chaos around him (and his creation isn't much different than he is in this regard). To me, this is how the book portrays him, rather than the mad scientist he's been turned into by Hollywood and other media over the years.

I read this, the 1831 version, so I plan to go back at some point and reread the 1818 original. I am quite interested to see what contrast there is between the two. There were times I felt the novel dragged out a bit too much (hence the four stars out of five), and it could have easily been a shorter work. It began as a short story and was expanded to a novel, so I suppose that accounts for some of it. Having three narrators (Walton and Frankenstein, and later, the monster himself) easily made it a longer tale. But as unnecessary as Walton felt at the beginning, I guess you could draw another parallel to his relationship with Frankenstein versus Frankenstein's with the monster (or "daemon", as he calls it in the story).

Third, some of Mary Shelley's passages are simply breathtaking and beautiful, for lack of a better phrase. Between highlighting and taking notes, I went to Google images more than a few times to look up the places she describes, to see if the reality matches what I envisioned through her prose. I've never been to any of the locations in the novel, so I found it to be a bit of a travelogue as well.

Fourth, man feeling betrayed by God or his Creator. When Frankenstein finally catches up to the "daemon" and vows to destroy him, he reluctantly decides to hear the monster's side of things. What we get here is a tale of a man who feels forsaken by a Higher Power and then is made to feel like more of an outcast later on (I'll spare the spoilers and let others discover what happens for themselves).

One of the reasons it took me two weeks to read this book was because of the time I spent highlighting, making notations, and using the dictionary. Again, it was written in 1818, so there is quite a list of archaic words and phrases you don't hear anymore within the pages.

Absolutely recommend it

It’s not my style to review a book I enjoyed by trashing another one I didn’t, but this needs to be said so please bear with me: a few days ago I was reading a collection of holiday romance stories and my biggest complaint was the fact that the male main character was always the same type of rich manwhore jerk with issues--every single story had a slightly different version of this guy and I was so fed up. Other thing these stories had in common was how the main characters would look at each other once and immediately nothing else occupied their minds except the idea of tearing each other's clothes and do the dirty all night long. This was a holiday themed book and honestly none of these stories cheered me up or put me in a Christmas mood, because, really, jerks and sex? Is that what holiday romance has come to?

That said, His Christmas Gift by Sarah Mayberry totally restored my faith in the genre because oh my goodness, it made me laugh and cry and feel all the things in between and I wish it was Christmas already so I could put up my tree and daydream about nice, good-looking, plaid clad lumberjacks. This is how you holiday romance, people!

I absolutely loved the hero, Sawyer, a big, humble, kind-hearted and shy tree farmer who may come off as grumpy at first but who is really not, and, sweet baby Jesus, I swooned so much over this guy throughout the whole story, SO MUCH. The way he cares so much for his sister, the way he takes care of Jenna, the other main character of this story, when she's sick and has to stay at his house, the way he doesn't think he has a chance with her but still wants to impress her and runs to town to cut his hair and buy new shirts, the way he cooks for her and tries to distract her from scratching her smallpox blisters, gaaah, he's so cute, honestly I could keep gushing about this character until I doubled the size of this paragraph, I really could. Nothing beats a nice guy who actually treats a girl right, nothing. I'll take Sawyer over brooding millionaires any day.

What also impressed me about this story was the fact that there is an actual story going on, and how the whole thing is not just about the couple getting together and the sexy parts--there's this whole situation going on with Sawyer's sister, Lacey, who just got out of jail and is struggling with so much regret and guilt, there’s the brother&sister relationship which needs some patching up, there's Jenna's own situation with her family and personal demons, her so natural growing friendship with Lacey, and of course the Jenna and Sawyer slow-burn--all this in this small book. It's remarkable. (Also, Sawyer with a broken leg! I shouldn’t say this was adorable BUT there’s something about the idea of a big, strong, extremely physical guy who is so used to do everything by himself and who suddenly can’t because he needs to slow down, keep his leg up, walk with crutches and accept help from others in general-–there is something awfully endearing about this situation, but I admit I’m still a terrible person for saying so.)

I really enjoyed the writing, especially the witty dialogues, Jenna and Sawyer’s easy banter was deliciously addictive, I found myself smiling like an idiot most of the time. It’s extraordinary how they go from barely saying hi to each other, to having long talks about silly things, about serious things, about themselves, and how it never felt forced. I’ll definitely check out other books by Sarah Mayberry.

I’m participating in a holiday read-a-thon at the moment, hence this book, and when I finished it, and for the sake of meeting my goals, I started reading another one immediately, and let me tell you guys, I’m totally going through a book hangover, reading this new story with new characters, the whole time wishing I still had Sawyer and Jenna to read about.

Absolutely recommend it. Happy holidays!

I was a bit underwhelmed

First impression is cute, predictable, slow simmer, uhm and the L word got dropped pretty quickly after they consummated their relationship which I thought was a little weird but it was a good story. Totally in the whole Christmas spirit. There’s this thing that authors do that I noticed in my reading… I don’t know if I’m getting technical or if I’m dissecting the crap outta this book but… So when authors want to evoke a strong emotional reaction from a character or a reader, what they do is they put them in close quarters for extended periods of time because that forces an attachment faster. Now I’ve read this many times in books. Many, many, many times and I’ve noticed it’s become a pattern. It’s very predictable and while it’s not a bad thing, it’s not always a good thing either.

I may be way off (or a little bitchy) but to me that shows a bit of laziness in the writing. I understand why the author does it and I understand that in some instances it is necessary but it didn’t have to be that way them for them to have that kind of emotional connection. They could have had the same amount of connection with being confined so closely, to me that was a negative on the book. I took away another star for predictability. Man, I’m kinda mean today huh?

Other than that it was a cute story, it had a great pace. I didn’t really connect with Sawyer as much as I connected with Jenna. He seemed too gruff and not emotive enough if that makes sense. He didn’t express himself well, I thought. I suspect that was the authors intention but I didn’t like it.

But I tell you what: the sex scene was….Whoa! Really good, like smoking hot!

I will probably read more Christmas books by her because it comes every year. But for now I think I am gonna try some other ones.

Loved it, laughed and cried.

There are a few things I need to say about His Christmas Gift by Sarah Mayberry. Number one and foremost this is a 5 stars book. Any time a book moves me to tears, I know it is a great book. Without giving too much away, I will say Jenna’s reunion scene did exactly that. Besides that I learned to understand and appreciate Sawyer Gallagher. It is more than just being able to see his perspective on all that had happened to his baby sister, Sarah Mayberry fleshed him out so that he and Jenna too for that matter seemed earnestly real.

His Christmas Gift and Three Nights Before Christmas parallel each other perfectly. I don’t think I have ever read two books by different authors do it this well. I do think that fans of Sarah Mayberry my say that they just would want to read this book. Well, they easily could, it is self-contained enough to be a stand-alone. Honestly they would be cheating themselves since Kat Latham’s book is from Lacey’s point of view. It too is an excellent read. Since I consider them to be reasonably priced (all of Tule Publishing are great buys), it is certainly worth the investment. These are both stories that one would want to reread.

About the Author
Lorenzo Candelaria (Bachelor of Music, Oberlin College, 1995; Ph.D., Yale University, 2001) is an award-winning teacher and author at The University of Texas at Austin, Butler School of Music. He is the recipient of prestigious fellowships from the Fulbright Program and the National Endowment for the Humanities and was presented with the Robert M. Stevenson Award by the American Musicological Society for his book THE ROSARY CANTORAL (2008).

Daniel Kingman is an American composer and Professor Emeritus, California State University, Sacramento.

Good Survey of American Music

I teach a course in United States music history at the high school level, and this college text is a good stretch for my students. It is clearly written, well organized, and provides great points for departure in my lectures. The accompanying CD set, though not perfect, is a convenient way to bring in examples and allows for some independent study. Music history teachers can augment the examples with their current CD holdings.
The text surveys "American" music, not just music of the United States, although that is in the majority. The distinction of American versus U.S makes for a good discussion point throughout the semester. We do not take the chapters in order (we begin with music of the early European settlers), and the book lends itself to that flexibility.
Although there may be better texts for specific music history topics, (i.e., Jazz or contemporary "serious" music) this is an excellent survey text for the advanced high schooler or college music history survey course. Term paper suggestions, questions for additional research and bibliography are included at the end of each chapter.

I ordered this book for my college class, and thought it had the CDs. It doesn't. I spent a lot of money for being "just" the book.

Uneven in its weight to genres of music

This is a concise edition of Daniel Kingman's previous book of the same title. I know of it having been used as a high school textbook on American Music.

Kingman's book begins with a great introduction of some of the various ethnic/folk musics of the American musical tradition: Anglo-American, African-American, American Indian, and Latino backgrounds. Part Two looks at music which germinated from the South-Country, Blues, and Rock. Other sections examine popular sacred music, secular music, jazz, a substantial section on classical music, and a small epilogue on other regional styles.

This text is good because it is not too difficult to read and interesting overall. Kingman does a good job of introducing the music and providing useful descriptions of each style.

His bibliographies at the end of each chapter are fantastic, and he also provides many useful project ideas which would work great for high school/college classes alike

Unfortunately, there are a host of problems. First, the section on jazz is too short (30 pages), as well as those on rock (25 pages) and musical theater (20 pages). Kingman also neglects to put each movement in its proper historical context. This does not seem to be an important goal for him.

Many courses teach either American Popular Music or American Art/Classical music, not both. There are better texts out there which are more specific. For a survey course on all American music, this can work, but will certainly need to be supplemented with primary source materials and information on jazz, rock, Broadway, and other areas.

A superb teaching tool

I'm a teacher of contemporary European history and I have used this essay of Sartre's in class. It is evocative, intelligent and sharp. It is an ideal complement to a general textbook on modern French or European history when you reach World War Two. The translation, which was originally published in Raritan, the literary journal, is terrific. Several of my students commented that it didn't seem like a translation at all. The translator, Lisa Lieberman, deserves praise both for the quality of her work and for the introduction she contributes. I hope this book will be the forerunner of many more. This book at least is a very useful teaching tool.

Excellent

An honest and painful rendering of the Parisian intellectual mindset just after the occupation ended. Satre is doing his best to explain the ambiguity and resisted but acknowledged guilt, while at the same time making a case for understanding. The translation felt totally seamless...it rang like I imagine Satre's voice rang, and I enjoyed the intro, too: it set the table for the essay very well.

The occupation from a French perspective

I've read dozens of books on World War II in Europe, including several books and articles about the German occupation of France, but most of these were strictly factual accounts that said little about the aftereffects of the occupation on the French psyche. There were, of course, the bombastic speeches of de Gaulle that made it sound as if the French people singlehandedly rose up and drove out the Germans. Sartre's essay "Paris Under the Occupation" countered this conceited optimism with a much more somber, humble tone. Addressing foreign readers, Sartre wrote that "Everything that London suffered with pride, Paris suffered in shame and despair." Shame that France had fallen to the Germans in only a few weeks; shame for Vichy; and the shame of France's symbiotic relationship with the occupying Germans, a mostly passive resistance that in effect made France a nation of collaborators. Sartre gives a very different perspective of France during the occupation, one that is not very complimentary of the French, but at the same time asks for the reader's understanding.

Kudos to Lisa Lieberman for a fine translation and a marvelous introduction to the essay.
