Lots of variety, packed with instruction

Like most people, I discovered Mark Crilley from his excellent tutorials on Youtube. I had high expectations of this book because I know he's a great teacher, but I wasn't sure how it would compare with the videos. You're probably wondering what you get from buying a book that the Youtube videos don't show for free. I've watched lots of Mark Crilley's tutorials, but there's something special about seeing the drawing printed on the page in front of me, there as a reference. If you wanted to, you could trace drawings for practice. The book also allows you to go at your own pace, which may take much longer than a ten-minute video can allow for. I think the book works well on its own or in combination with the videos.

The book is divided into three chapters: Heads and Faces, Proportions and Poses, and Setting the Scene. The bulk of the book is made up of step-by-step guides for drawing specific character types. Adults, teens, kids and toddlers are covered, as well as chibis. The written instructions give tips about showing the gender, age and personality of the characters. One thing that sets this book apart is that several pages are devoted to portraying fuller-figured characters, something that I haven't seen much in other manga how-to books.

There are also more advanced tutorials for kissing poses and drawing a martial arts scene, as well as thorough instruction for drawing folds and wrinkles in clothing. Some of the most useful content is towards the end. There's information about inking drawings, laying out panels and adding speech bubbles and sound effects. One of the most interesting parts is a page showing Mark Crilley's process in creating a manga page from start to finish.

Quite a few page spreads feature a large number of small drawings, for example 101 manga eyes or 50 ways to draw hands. These are good for reference and include some pointers, but there are some that would be worth expanding into a full step-by-step tutorial. I'd love a whole book based on the 20 classic poses! Perspective and backgrounds are covered in the third chapter, and this is another area that I wouldn't mind seeing expanded. The tutorials cover the technicalities of perspective, but they don't show much about how to work characters into these settings. I would also have liked to see more discussion of shading and color. Everything included in the book is great and it's absolutely packed with helpful information on every page, but I do think the author has even more to offer and I'd love it if this turned out to be the first part of a series.

One final note: There's no nudity in this book; all figures are drawn either fully clothed or wearing simple underclothes. Busty vixens and muscle men are notably absent. There's no gore, the content is very family-friendly. This book would be an appropriate gift for adolescents interested in drawing manga. However, the detailed level of instruction would probably be too difficult for young children.

Art 101 With a Manga Flair

Don't let the title fool you. This is an art book first, 'how to draw' manga-style book second.

This book as a TON of useful information that other manga drawing series lack ranging from Art 101 topics like perspective and scale to basic anatomy. Even if you are not a complete newbie it serves as a nice refreasher course and reminder, all while keeping its manga slant. Beyond the educational values of the early lessons it also has great referance material ranging from various emotions, folds in clothing, hands, feet, and even various age groups/character archtypes.

It is a great educational resource and is presented in a very fun Japanese-inspired manner. I have a collection of maybe 20 'how to draw' books , including a 12 book series on how to draw in a manga style specifically. If I could only recommend one book it would have to be this one. Plus if this book is not enough for you be sure to check out Mark Crilley's YouTube channel for additional instruction.

Awesome, but needs a few tweaks

I ADORE this book. Helpful for the clueless beginners on drawing manga. Yet no matter how much I love it, I can't help but notice it's flaws. Mark shows us 40 hairstyles, 101 manga eyes, 12 common faicial expressions, 20 chibi emotions (full figured drawings), 101 ways to draw hands, 50 ways to draw feet, 30 classic poses, a few displays of affection etc. etc. What I hate is how he only shows you each drawing, and not how to draw each way step by step. Although it would have taken more time for him to complete the book, I think that if he did this it wouldn't only make his book more popular, but much more helpful for people buying it.

Dave Robinson was once a roadie to Jimi Hendrix. He also managed Brinsley Schwarz and was behind their ill-fated publicity stunt when he flew journalists to New York to see their gig at the Fillmore East. By 1974, he was managing the Hope & Anchor pub in Islington.



Jake Riviera had been road manager for Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers and later Dr Feelgood.



In1976, this maverick pair were to launch Stiff Records, supposedly on the back of a £400 loan from Lee Brilleaux of the Feelgoods. In fact, they never cashed the check.



The genius of Stiff was to take old pub rockers that they knew and turn them into new wave stars. Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe were all going nowhere until they were signed the label and reinvented. For a while, the major labels didn’t know how to respond to Stiff, particularly their brilliant marketing – coloured vinyl, different coloured sleeves for the completest market and their slogans, such as “If It Ain’t Stiff, It Ain’t Worth a fuck".



Riviera left the label in 1977 to form Radar Records and took Costello and Lowe with him



The label signed quirky acts such as Wreckless Eric, Devo, Rachel Sweet, Lene Lovich and more. Many of them were sent on package tours reminiscent of the Larry Parnes’ tours in the 1960s.



They also launched Stiff America to no little success.



Robinson signed Madness and The Pogues to the label before it went bankrupt in 1986. However, it re-launched in 2006 under new management and is still going strong.



Richard Balls has interviewed over 50 artists and Stiff staff to tell a story that is long overdue. Shane MacGowan, Lene Lovich, Chas Smash, Wreckless Eric and more tell what it was like to work for the world’s most outrageous record label.



Tony Judge, who runs the Be Stiff website has provided lots of rare photos along with badges and memorabilia to make this a celebration of a great record label.



Balls' other book on the life of Ian Dury sold a hefty 30,000 copies, so he has a following.

Richard Balls wrote Sex& Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll: The Life of Ian Dury for Omnibus in 2000. It sold over 30,000 copies and is still selling today. Richard is a publicity manager for Norwich City Council and lives in the city with his wife and two daughters. He is a passionate fan of Norwich City FC. He is the cousin of Ed Balls, Labour's Shadow Chancellor Of The Exchequer.

As ever with Stiff, money was tight. Jake did his sums and reckoned their prestigious date with Television would just about cover their trip to Los Angeles. But the artfully edgy New York band fronted by the charismatic Tom Verlaine, refused to have Stiff’s increasingly infamous punks on their bill. The snub was a bitter blow.



Rat says: “We went to see them and I remember Jake throwing a lot of abuse. ’Show us your tits!’ I think is was what he shouted. The tragic thing about it actually was that we really liked Television and Little Johnny Jewel was what everybody really talked about. That was the first punk single or one of them. They were something else and they gave punk an absolute musical credibility. But their attitude was so punk, because it was completely out there, with Little Johnny Jewel specifically. There is some good stuff on Marque Moon, but the kind of griminess that Richard Hell put on it just wasn’t there. It was like freeform jazz that made sense and it was kind of intellectual. And I was really pleased. ’Okay, I’m in a punk band and everyone’s saying punk bands are three chords. But these guys are really accomplished and you could put them on any stage anywhere‘. So when they said, ‘You can’t do it’, we were actually quite gutted. I know we got a bit spiteful about it. But that was one of the reasons we were a bit spiteful because we thought they’d be on our side. I doubt they’d even heard us. I think it was more our reputation preceding us and Tom Verlaine saying, ‘I’m not having a fucking freak show going on before me’.”

A few words from someone who was there...

I worked at Stiff for 5 wonderful & intense years and Richard Balls' book has described accurately the insanity, the hilarity, the fun and the hell it was to be a small part of the company's history. I'm biased because I know or knew 80% of the people mentioned in the book but - if you need an endorsement from someone who was there - here it is. A great read which brought back many happy memories and has rekindled a new bunch of nightmares!

BE STIFF !

I can dig it.
Ive read numerous books over the years on indie record labels but this is the first Ive read
that is solely on Stiff Records.
Besides the usual on the start up and early history we get a lot of pre- Stiff records background,
the personalities behind the label and the numerous musicians .
Its nice to read about Wreckless Eric, Kirsty MacColl, Jona Lewie among others for a change instead of the usual
focus on Elvis Costello, Madness and Nick Lowe. The author hit on what drew me to Stiff- in the 80's I head "Brilliant Mind" off the "Some Kind Of Wonderful" soundtrack and it sounded like an American indie band so I went researching into the band and then later the label.
High recommended !

A very good read indeed

A very good read indeed. Richard's Ian Dury biog was also a very enjoyable book, and this book is a must for anyone who loved the music that Stiff Records unleashed onto the nation in '76/'77. I am still the proud owner of BUY1 with "Plug Copy" stamped on the label. Stiff was a label as important as Chess and Motown in my opinion, and this book is an excellent reminder of their importance in the scheme of things.

nice overview, little depth (no pun intended)

The depth I'm referring to is the content, of course. I like the book and I will keep it because there is really useful beginner's information on different types of lacing and netting, but I actually was hoping for a bit more instruction on how to do needle lacing.

Just a dabble

I liked this book because it introduces several types of needlework (especially the ones that are hard to find information on) however there is not enough information to really get started in the different needlework items. If it was more expansive it would be an invaluable reference.

A nice place to start

This book is great for beginners, who are unfamiliar with some of the different types of lace. Although no lace is gone into in depth, there is enough in each part to get you started and understand the differences. The illustrations are very clear, and I found the instructions quite easy to follow. It is only a little book, though, so don't expect too much. The one thing that really delighted me was the chapter on netting - how the fishermen used to do it. There Have been many times when I've searched for information on this topic and have come up empty.

About the Author
Apostolis K. Salkintzis, Motorola Inc., Greece Received his Diploma in 1991 and his Ph.D. degree in 1997, both from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, Xanthi, Greece Worked as a research Engineer at the Democritus University, studying mobile data networks and working on research projects dealing with the design and implementation of wireless data networks and protocols. Was a Sessional Lecturer at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, The University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1999. Has been with Motorola Inc., since Sept. 1999, working on the design and standardization of modern telecommunication networks, focusing in particular on GPRS, UMTS and WLANs. Is a member of the IEEE and a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Nikos Passas, University of Athens, Greece Received his Diploma (honours) from the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Patras, Greece, and his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, Greece. Has been with the Communication Networks Laboratory of the University of Athens, working as a sessional lecturer and research associate since 1995.

Thought provoking, depressingly accurate reading!

While researching the topic of American lobbying in the Senate for a Political Science paper, I stumbled upon this book. After reading it cover to cover (unlike the first reviewer), I can attest to its accuracy and excellent content. The effect large corporations have on influencing the democratic goings-on in Washington cannot be understated, and the authors of this book make no attempt to do so. Selecting a few of the most socially-harmful industries (such as gambling and tobacco), Passas and Goodwin carefully illustrate how they influence legislation and win favor thanks to their deep pockets and use of savvy and unscrupulous lobbyists. This book is highly recommended to anyone concerned with the way democracy operates in America.

Liberal Garbage

I saw this book in a book store one day and did some light reading. If I could give it less than one star I would. Our system is not perfect. It never was intended to be. The writers of this atrocity and those who think in similar manners, would be the first victims (professional victims) in the world they envision. Talk about harmful social consequences. I guess it is a popular topic for the Volvo driving Latte sipping crowd.

The book was O.K. but somewhat dissappointing. Most of the book was describing Dahmers victims and thier lives. I wish that the book would have talked about Jeffrey Dahmer a little more. The book was mainly about his victims and their families. I was interested in Jeffrey himself and how and why he murdered, had sex with, and ate his victims. There was only small sections in the book that quoted Dahmer.

Patagonia doesn't end at the border!

When traveling in Patagonia, border crossings are the norm. Why would a mapmaker make the Chilean side of the region a black hole? Obviously, to sell another map! Do yourself a favor and buy one map of Patagonia. This isn't the one. I sent it back to Amazon.
