About the Author
Becky Thorn is a primary school teacher with a long-suffering husband and two children (on whom she tries out her recipes). She has appeared on Masterchef as a guest amateur restaurant critic, and recently designed a meal for the Heinz Weightwatchers range. Her first two books, School Dinners and Movie Dinners were also published by Portico.

Makes School Dinners nice

This is a book that you will either love with fond memories, hate with not-so-fond memories or be totally bemused as to its contents.
For some reason traditional British school dinners have a capacity to polarise opinions. Maybe things are different today but for those who went to a British school before the 1990s will surely have a veritable trip down memory lane with this great little book.
This book is filled full of recipes that will let you recreate those school-time culinary creations at home. Although the book doesn't tell you how to make custard extra lumpy or how to make the boiled eggs turn out green and hard as a gobstopper. Some of the recipes are unfamiliar to this reviewer, possibly coming into vogue after school had finished, such as chicken curry but the other recipes can be a total trip down memory lane. Spam Fritters, Jam Roly-Poly, Minced-meat Pie and Pink Custard... yummmmm!
The recipes give a little bit of knowledge at the start, such as a Beef Cobbler acting as a hot-water bottle, keeping you warm for a time after consumption as well as providing a means for many a schoolboy snigger at its name. Each recipe is written in an informal, yet easy-to-understand way and there are even some groan-worthy jokes and similar factoids thrown in for good measure.
It would have been nice, for the benefit of the uninitiated, to have had some photographs of the recipes and to perhaps show those with dire memories of school food how a dish should have in fact looked if the school kitchen had not managed to mangle it out of all recognition. Yet this was a great, quirky, different and considerate book that perhaps should be in every cook's collection - if not just for novelty value. Although there are many good, honest recipes here that could provide nutritious, affordable food for the entire family. So, please miss, can we have some more (recipes)?

Originally Published in 2007, Good Old Fashion School Dinners has been republished in an e-book format. Although this is filled with recipes from the UK, of which I have just begun to learn from some of my Facebook friends I so wanted to review it because it made me think of my own school days and the meals that were served. When in Grade School we always wondered why whenever they mowed the lawn there was spinach served the next day? What was that meat they served every Friday, not to mention who was brave enough to eat it?
Out side of those questions and the fact that the dishes are best known in the UK by the names given, some were often served here by a different name. Now the Macaroni Cheese, Chicken Pie, Meatballs, Pineapple Upside-down Cake, Rice or Tapioca Pudding and Apple Pie are pretty much universal, the others might seem a bit odd to some. Let me assure you they are tasty all the same. I first served my family Toad in the whole a few months back and my family enjoyed it so much I began asking for other recipes that my friends outside the United States grew up on. The Spam Fritters were next and went over rather well. I must admit the Treacle Tart, Cottage Pie and the Sausage Plait were better received. I went on to try the Liver and Bacon using Calf's Liver and found it was delicious. As was the Cornflake Tart. I look forward to trying even more of these unusual recipes.
If you are not from the UK or familiar with the metric measurements it is easy to get a hold of a conversion chart. Luckily as I said have many friends who send recipes that need to be converted and have gotten to where I can automatically do it without having to look it up every time. The recipes will take you back through the years to your childhood so enjoy, but be sure not to miss the second bell and be lat to class.
